A recent article published in FM World by Dennis Pope and Jill Goodman of NLP concluded that the recent and proposed changes to the planning system intended to make life easier for businesses will in reality do little to encourage business investment.
The continuing emphasis on sustainable development and combating climate change as reflected by the need for all new non-domestic buildings in England to be zero carbon from 2019 is likely to add significant costs for business development.
The Conservatives proposals to change the planning system to place greater emphasis on planning decisions being made locally will also give priority to local resident concerns rather than business needs.
Dennis Pope, Senior Associate Director, noted that "town planning will continue to be a major challenge and potentially an obstacle for businesses who wish to bring forward development and this is unlikely to change whoever is elected later this year."
