West London's 1950s Lucozade sign - a rare example of kinetic modernist advertising which greets motorists with the date, time, temperature and slogan “Lucozade replaces lost energy” - has been saved through an innovative approach to conservation.
Audi UK replaced the unlisted Lucozade factory and sign on the M4 with a building designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects. The London Borough of Hounslow only agreed due to the following NLP proposed measures:
  • a detailed recording of the sign (constructed of handmade bulbs and operated by an early computer)
  • display of the reconstructed sign at the Gunnersbury Museum
  • erection of a replica on the M4 by world experts in outdoor advertising, JC Deceaux.
NLP Director, David Gavin said "This is neither preservation as found, nor restoration, but is a solution that alludes to history in terms of the earlier signage technology and the reference to the area's manufacturing past."
