The coalition Government's announcement of its Building the Big Society Programme heralds the introduction of changes to the planning system. Two of the related proposals to be expanded on in the forthcoming comprehensive Programme for Government are the abolition of Regional Strategies giving greater decision making powers on housing and planning to local councils, and a "radical" reform of the planning system to give neighbourhoods far more influence on shaping their localities. The intention to give greater financial autonomy to local government may also preface the introduction of financial incentives for local authorities to support more housing in their areas.
We are not surprised by the announcement. NLP director Gareth Morgan, commented " given the agreement between the parties on the principles of these issues, the direction of change is unsurprising. The timescale and detail of the proposals will, however, be fascinating as will the extent to which the proposals evolve to respond to the planning and property industries' comments".
